Rethinking my little living room look…
11 Jul 2021
Dear LPG,
I had a bit of a sobering thought the other day after reading a recent LPG article about how much smaller our living spaces are these days (►►►). the writer of that article gave us a flavour of the size of the house she grew up in which brought back memories of my own childhood, and it also reminded me of two other facts of life that have been plaguing me for a while now.
The first is the difference in the size of the flat I live in now, as opposed to the family home which represented the first ever house I moved out of. The fact is that each move I have made between the two has left me with a little less space, and secondly, I have spent a lot of lockdowns staring at my four walls and threatening to make a project of redecorating. It is interesting how you just get used to where you live and, while you are busy spending all day out and about you often miss the way it all evolves.
I read somewhere that first impressions are made in the first 10 seconds of seeing someone or something, and I have had 31.54 million of them to develop a lasting impression of my living room which seems to have got smaller during lockdown. My computer helped me to calculate that there are that many seconds in a year, and I have had that much time to work out that I am not overly impressed with the view I have spent about a year looking at day after day.
Now that we are nearly free again, I have decided that it is time to put my house in order with a complete make-over, but the rooms are small, and the ceilings are low, so I have been doing a little online research and I have learned a few tips about making small rooms look bigger.
I am still thinking about it, and I have no doubt that I am not the only person who thinks that a completely new living room look might be the way forward. Things like light coloured walls, smaller pieces of furniture, bigger mirrors and longer curtains never occurred to me before.
So, just in case there are any other LPG readers thinking about redecorating, I would like to share what I have found.
