Depression and a possible bit of online self-help…
25 Jun 2021
Dear LPG,
After the year that we have all been through I think that there are more depressed people than ever on the planet. I have always thought that having too much to do is better than not having enough stuff to fill our days with, and I have heard so many of my friends tell me that they still have loads to do at home, in spite of the fact that we have been locked down for over a year. At the beginning of all this, the media went to a lot of trouble to remind us that lockdown should be regarded as a time to do all those jobs around the house that we needed to catch up with: the tasks that we never manage to do because there is no time between all the outings and meetings that usually keep us away from home. Sadly, I have really got nowhere in spite of all the things I planned to get done and the time I have had to do them. This is something that can add to depression; that feeling of not making progress.
Somehow I have found ways to put far too many things off. I have looked at so many tasks that I promised myself I would get done during the past year, and still find a reason to promise myself that I will get started ‘tomorrow’ nearly every day, even though seeing what has not been done depresses me even more.
We keep being promised that this ‘having to stay home’ world that we are now living in is all coming to an end soon, although the government is also saying that the date when we will actually be able to get out and about might change yet again.
Apparently 10% of people get depressed during their lifetime and what I have written so far has not been helpful for lifting the spirits, but I found some internet ideas designed to help us help ourselves find a way out of the downward spiral which is depression and I hope a bit of reading and watching might help a few readers work their way up again, no matter how little they have been affected.
Taking a look at the links that I hope LPG have put below my message might just help.
