A day to ‘Live long and prosper.’

Dear LPG,
As I read the LPG pages I have learned two things. The first is that few subjects are ‘off limits’ and the second is the habit that LPG has of matching the messages they offer with days that have some historical or celebratory relevance. With this in mind, I suspect that some readers might be interested in what I would like to offer today.
I was 22 years old when I watched the first ever episode of Star Trek that was aired in the UK, and we were all anticipating the first moon landing which happened just days later. I think that many will think that at the age of 74 I should have grown out of all that by now, but I have been and continue to be a firm fan and I know that I am not the only senior one.
It all started in the USA, on September 8th 1966 and the day, today if LPG has managed to post my message on the day I asked them to, has well and truly been established as Star Trek day for the fan-faithful. I remember after seeing the first series, that in spite of my age, I would have readily given up my job for a place on a star ship. As old as I am, I still secretly have all the aspirations that a 6-year-old boy would have, and would answer, ‘to have a job on the enterprise’ if I was ever asked the question, ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ It has now been 54 years since the world’s first experience, but a lot of people still know who Captain James T Kirk, Mr Spock and John Luke Picard are, to name but a few.
I have never been to a convention, felt the need to learn how to speak Klingon or dress up as a Vulcan but I still find myself watching the old episodes which are still replayed on one British television channel or another nearly every day.
I think that one of the aspects that intrigued me most was all the gadgets that we all got used to as the different series played out. I have always wished that we could transport to holiday destinations rather than having to fly, and the idea of replicating whatever I fancied for dinner appealed too, while I would really love to experience a holodeck.
You would have to have seen a few episodes to understand exactly what I am talking about, but I was surprised to find out that a lot of the gadgets that were first featured in the show are now reality.
So, for all those who identify as Trekkies or just fans of the world of Star Trek, I would like to share a few of the memories that the internet has to offer.
