I just wanted to say a few words about an age related subject that is being talked about a little these days.  Discrimination is ever present in many aspects of our lives and the obvious examples are those concerning gender, colour and size.

I defy anyone not to have heard something of Emmeline Pankhurst and her fight for women and the vote, while we are still living through times where the association between footballers and the phrase ‘taking the Knee’ have some significance and, every now and then, that discussion about how the models with perfect figures seem to be chosen over the bigger ones for so many of the adverts that we see on TV still rears its head.

One aspect of discrimination that is often overlooked though is that of age.  When people think about it, it is often because of the way it affects the young or those who are still working, but there are other ways that you can be discriminated against.  The Equality Act 2010: came into play just over a decade ago and just like all laws of its kind, it is very wordy and I never bothered to find out about how it might affect people who had reached retirement.  I remember the news and I have to say that I don’t feel that I have any related issues at the moment, but I found a relatively easy to read version offered by Age UK that really helped me to understand its relevance to us older folk and thought it might be worth sharing. 

Hopefully the law has succeeded in minimising the occurrences of inequality in all things although we know that many of the other aspects that this law is supposed to protect us against can be overlooked at times, and knowing how and where to go to check your rights is never a bad thing.
