Versed thoughts (chapter 44): STRANGERS PASSING
11 Jul 2022
Dear LPG,
This poem highlights the concern shown, with a simple sentence, by one old person for another. It tells how the old lady sensed that the stranger looked worried, smiled and gave an everyday greeting, which had a lasting effect.
I know that we all feel like that at times, some more often than others. I am sure that many will also agree that one can feel as lonely walking down a crowded street as when sitting at home if there is no one to talk to. But having the courage to offer one quick sentence can sometimes make all the difference.
STRANGERS PASSING BY.
The platform was crowded
as lockdown ended.
People approached, people caught up,
All strangers passing by.
The old lady smiled. ‘Hello,
isn’t it wonderful to be out.’
I replied, affirming it was, thinking
One stranger was aware.
I was on my way to the clinic
to get the result of the scan.
She must have seen my worry;
Pausing, without passing by.
I was cheered, arriving in hope.
It meant something, not to be passed by.

LPG has saved Fosters poem until today because it has been designated National Cheer up the Lonely Day. It is an American observance but is just as relevant all over the world…
