A day to question supremacy?

03 Nov 2022

Dear LPG,

I read an article over a year ago now on LPG’s pages about how much power the Queen does, or does not have (►►►), and I know that quite a few LPG posts are based on anniversaries and celebration days.  the two thought sort of came together in my mind and got me thinking about a historical anniversary which might be of interest.

Did you know that today marks the 488th Anniversary of the establishment of the church of England and, when I think of all the different fundamental reasons to start a church how this all came about comes up as one of  the most peculiar?

Most readers will remember their school history lessons where Henry VIII will have featured somewhere along the line, and there have been quite a few films which tell the story of his need for a son, the reasons why he thought that he had not managed to have one after 24 years of marriage, and his arguable wish to move onto a new wife.

Perhaps it would be a good idea not to mention all the people who were affected directly or indirectly by his actions (although I can’t help but spare a thought for what happened to Lady Jane Grey, who was queen for a very short while a few years later).

It is interesting to note that all this happened as the result of an act of parliament which was called the Act of Supremacy, which installed him as the Supreme Head of the church of England and, though there were quite a few other differences, the new church allowed divorce and their priests to marry.

But then again, monarchs appeared to have had a bit more power back in the day didn’t they?
