Perfection v good enough…

08 Jan 2022

Dear LPG,

There are many contrasts in the characteristics of us human beings which leave us on an imaginary see-saw which can pivot either one way or the other, and although we all could do similar things and have similar qualities, it is where we find ourselves balancing on my metaphorical scales which makes each of us individual.

I think that one of the best things about being retired is that we have a bit more freedom when it comes to our creativity.  We don’t have to hurry when doing or creating and we usually have less severe limitations on when we have to be finished than a person who is working all day.

It is a case of whatever I do I know that when I worked full time, I never seemed to have time to do anything properly, and things went to the other extreme when we were all locked down during the past two years.  But for all the time I had on my hands, and all the projects I started during that time, I don’t seem to have completed very much.  No matter what I do (getting ready to face the world each morning, making something, choosing a new bit of furniture for my house or even just tidying up and sorting out the kitchen), I seem to abort and move on much too often having done a job which is not quite finished in my eyes.  Does this make me a procrastinator?

I recently found an online quiz and some other information which has helped me to think differently about my inability to see anything I do as finished properly. The internet is suggesting that I might be a bit of a perfectionist.   I have to admit that it has been hinted at before by my friends and work colleagues over the years but I never took it seriously.

Now I am thinking that perhaps my need to get things just right is also one of my problems.  I have always thought it important but perhaps I spend a little too much time striving for something that does not exist.

Judging from the information I have found, I can’t be the only person who feels this way.  I was surprised at just how much is online and now that I have found this information perhaps it is worth sharing…
