You are never too old to move the motivational goalposts…

03 Jan 2023

Dear LPG,

Here is a question that I ask myself a lot and it is a question that I think we should all be asking ourselves from time to time.   My big question of the day is …

When do you know you have finished achieving everything that you want to?

They always say that you should quantify your goals so that you know when you have achieved them.

I suppose, as in every other aspect of life there are some who already achieved their particular ultimate goal a long time ago while others will have always thought about something they have wanted to do without achieving it.

Is your first reaction to your version of the answer to my question remembering something that you did that made you and those all around you proud many years ago now?

I mean, how do you set a new goal after having already reached the top of your personal Mount Everest years ago, and when you have been into your own personal version of outer space what other destination is there left to visit.

Perhaps you are one of the people who have now convinced themselves that it is too late to fulfil your lifetime achievement because of some limitation that has put itself in the way as you got older.

Are you one of those people who have decided that you can’t run a marathon because your knees won’t let you now that you have the time to, or perhaps you have wanted to write a book ever since you were young and you think that it is too late to start now because you will never have time to finish it.

Whether you think you have already achieved your ultimate goal or that it is just not worth starting now that you are older.   I just want to repeat a message that I have seen in these pages so many times before.

If there is a problem with your goal, including the fact that you have already reached it, it is time to change the goalposts!

My wish for everyone is that they keep finding goals to reach and things to do, no matter how small, big, outlandish or unappealing to others. And write your milestones down so that you can look back and see how far you have come.
