Council Tax rebates… contrary to the official advice, there is one thing you can do…
10 Jul 2022
Dear LPG,
I am writing near enough to the beginning of the new tax year and I am sure that all homeowners will know by now that if they own a house that has been placed in band A to D they should find themselves in receipt of a bit of a Council Tax rebate in the not-too-distant future.
I found a little online information which anyone can look up and it tells that homeowners need do nothing and that this amount will just be returned to the account that they pay their council tax from at some time after April. In the light of the way that our utility bills and shopping bills are climbing, I am sure that we are all grateful for any help we can get but, as ever, I note that the advice is that we do nothing, and this will just happen.
But I suggest that we do need to do something and that is check that we get our money back from them. I can find nowhere where the Government online information offers a time scale for when these payments will be received, so I hope that my message will serve as a reminder that all eligible readers keep a check on their bank statements.
If you don’t know which band your house is in your council tax bill will tell you but, the renewal bills are likely to have arrived a couple of weeks ago now and I know that mine will be mixed up with all the post that has come since, but you can find out online.
We are all getting a little too used to being told to do nothing in my estimation, and one thing that we should be doing is making sure that our entitlement is returned to our bank accounts, so I strongly suggest that as our bank statements arrive, we make a point of checking for our rebates to make sure that they have also arrived.
We are to be contacted if we do not pay our council tax bills by direct debit and I again hope that my note will remind readers whose bank account details the council don’t have, to check and make sure this has happened.
