Being more confident when surrounded…

01 Jul 2022

Dear LPG,

I have no doubt that LPG has written about this subject before, but I would like to bring it up again.

We are always being told that getting into water is good for us older people.  It is the perfect way to exercise while being kind to your muscles and older bones.  It is also a fact that any pensioner who has grown up in England will have been reminded repeatedly that we live on an island which is surrounded by the wet stuff.   That fact alone should influence us all to see that we should all be equipped to deal with being surrounded by liquid…

Did you know that a third of us still have not got being able to swim down to a fine art.?  Apparently 1 in 3 adults just can’t get our legs off the water-filled ground confidently.

I know that the weather is changeable over here, but I am writing this on the hottest day of the British year so far.   I got so hot that I did not know what to do.  My answer was lots of cold drinks and a couple of cool showers, but I was just thinking about how much cooler I would have been if I was brave enough to get into a pool of water.

My basic message is a reminder that you are never too old to have another go at dipping your toes.  I can swim but, for those who can’t, it is often being confident enough to breathe safely when surrounded that is the initial problem.

If all you manage to do is to be more self-assured when immersed it is never too late to have a go despite what you think you look like in a swimming costume these days…
