Dear LPG, 

The Pandemic gave me a reason to learn to use a smart phone.  There was not a lot else to do and, once I had learnt how, it got used often.  They say practice makes perfect and I have perfected the art of how to make a phone call.  That took a bit of time to learn but once I got the hang of it, it made those long, lonely days of lockdown so much easier to cope with.  

But now that the word ‘lockdown’ is all but a part of history, though I find myself remembering to put my phone in my pocket when I go out, I am not doing much with it.  That was until I read some of the pages on your website.

I read, about your drive to get readers to share the stories behind some of the pictures that we have taken and now that we can get out and about again, I have found that there is quite a lot that we see and then dismiss because we don’t use the cameras that each phone has nowadays.  you have inspired me to learn to take pictures which means that the phone is still getting used and I have learned about something else I can do with it.

There are so many sights to see when you are out and about, although it can be so easy to miss the moment for fear of dropping the phone in your hurry to focus and shoot.   But when I am in the passenger seat of my son’s car I can grab the phone in the secure knowledge that if I do drop it, it will land softly and we might have to grope around under the seat, but it won’t fall out of the car.

I took this one evening at, about 5 o’clock, in January 2020 although it could have been early one morning I suppose.  I know this because the phone tells you when it was taken, and even though I would be hard pushed to remember where I was going, the blue and gold colours, and the cloudy British weather make for a decent composition of a typical London suburb street scene.  I never said that I had a steady hand, but even the fact that I missed somewhat and managed to get quite a bit of the cars dashboard in it adds something don’t you think?    Perhaps that is what caught my eye.

I recently read an article about art appreciation on your website (►►►) but unlike AP, I do find myself getting captured in the moment sometimes.  It occurs to me that this could be a bit of modern art if it was not a photo. Most people take pictures of beautiful sunsets taken on faraway holidays but, as pictures go, I think this one has its merits…
