Not knowing where you are going?
20 Sep 2022
Dear LPG,
I know a lot of people who would take a look at the title of my post today and think that I am planning a long soul-searching message about what you have done with your life and where you are aiming for in the future, and while those are really good questions for another time, they have nothing to do with what I want to talk about today.
I have always had an orientation problem but it is purely geographical. My problem is a really poor sense of direction witch has left me with some really odd stories to tell. I am not just talking about not being able to get to venues for the first time.
I have always been one of those people who can’t even find my way round with a map in my hand. I even once got lost on the way home when a fully grown adult (my excuse at the time is that I had not long moved). There have been many times when I was late for work, school and other appointments because my directional focus just goes blank every now and then and it still happens more than I would like, but we all muddle through most things don’t we?
The other day I stumbled upon quite a lot of information about how to combat this little problem and one thing that I learned is that I am not the only person afflicted in this way. Apparently 2% of the population suffer and it has nothing to do with any other mental impairment.
Every week for the past six months I have opted to stay with a friend who lives a bit further north than London and it means a train journey followed by a four-minute walk which takes me around one corner but I have to say that there have been five occasions so far when I just could not find her house. A lot of people think that I am really clever because I know what sat nav is all about but pure necessity has forced me to learn how to use the Google Maps app on my smart phone.
I thank the Lord, and whoever invented the concept, and say that it really works most of the time, even if it is offering instructions while you are walking down the road and looking a bit silly.
