Dear LPG, 

I felt the need, having prepared the way for this very special day with my message yesterday, to remind all LPG readers about one of the celebration days that is definitely worth bothering with.  Today is chosen as the day when it is especially worth scheduling some seriously important ‘me’ time.

The need for a National Breathing Space Day was identified by Scotland from what I can see, and they chose February 1st because perhaps after the darkness of January in our part of the world’s winter they have recognised the importance of a day dedicated to oneself.

As I mentioned in my preparation message yesterday, I sincerely hope that there is no one out there who feels that a day dedicated to pampering yourself is not needed just because we are pensioners and, having had a day to think about how to spend these self-centred 24 hours, I hope that your plans are all ready to go.  If not though, there are still little things that can make the day special.

We all know that depression affects more and more people of all ages and if yours stems from being alone, today is not the day for that.  It is not too late to make a call and connect with someone who might otherwise have spent the day on their own.  As the Scottish organisation who originated the celebration points out, it is often the people you least expect that really need to take full advantage of today’s sentiments.   

So, while the emphasis needs to be on working out what will take you away from what in your life seems humdrum, monotonous and hard to live with, perhaps a day of reading, meditation or a couple of films might make all the difference. Can I also remind you that if you can leave all that behind by adding to someone else’s positive ’me’ experience (by making a phone call, sharing a window shopping day or a walk with nature), with them, all the better.
