Global sharing on a smaller scale?

17 May 2024

Dear LPG,

When looking online recently, I found some information about a celebration day, which happened for a couple of years, although I can find no evidence of a 2024 celebration.   You may well be hearing about its existence for the first time because I wrote this little message, but if it has been forgotten, I think it should be revived.  This was an event in 2012 and 2014; from what I have read about it, there were conferences and several significant events held.  The main idea was quite grand, but just focusing on people sharing what they have a little too much of with the people around them sounded very positive.  I got thinking about the small ways that everyone can contribute to such a community-based celebration and what an excuse to have a month or two to prepare our smaller efforts will do to improve the result.

You might ask why I am talking about it at this time, and my answer is so that we can prepare.  If we forget, for a minute, all the grand notions that I have found about past events, upcoming events and the big picture and remember that all big pictures start small, we can each make our individual contributions to the cause.

I have always thought communities come in big and small sizes, and it would be good to see some of the local day centres and organisations that we senior citizens attend doing their bit.

Suppose we could organise a few events (even on a small scale).  We older people usually have so many possessions that we bought and never used, which we have resolved to get rid of but just can’t because it would be a shame to throw them away.  Perhaps we would be willing to give those items to someone else who might find them helpful.  Just having a swap event where group members can offer, swap and use such items would be a good way to start.

By looking on the internet, I have worked out that Global sharing will, or would have, be celebrated somewhere near the week, which starts on the 17th of June and runs until the 21st this year, although I might be wrong.  Whenever it is, I hope my message has given a little food for thought and time to prepare.
