What if your cat does not come back?

14 Apr 2024

Dear LPG,

I read with interest your recent post, which I am sure will give hope to anyone who has lost a cat (►►►).   I have one, and although, to date, she has not gone missing as such, I know what it is like when you don’t see your pet for longer than what, for you and them, has become the usual amount of away time.

We hear so much about the fact that they are becoming more sought after by some thieves, and when mine does not come home at night, the fear of her being caught by a fox can be another worry.  I also think many cat owners will relate to what LA had to say about hearing the sound of a catfight that you can’t see when you look out of your window into the darkness, especially if you know your cat is out there.

But I did find a few comforting facts on the internet.  Depending on which website’s information you work with, some 74% of all UK missing cats will return even after a week away.

It is also worth noting that while the ‘poster on the tree’ is still an option if this happens to you, some websites now offer a platform where you can let your neighbours know of your loss. It will soon become mandatory for all cats to be microchipped, but while this will make it easier to identify one found, I know that my cat’s chip does not double as a cat tracker.

Recently, there has been a surge in the production of these pet-tracking devices, which can tell where your cat is, using the same principles as a car’s sat-nav device, although they seem designed to be worn on your pet’s collar.  My cat has lost so many collars over the years that I can’t keep one on her.  They usually send a signal back to your mobile phone, which will be available as yet another app and a monthly or annual subscription will be part of the package.

While online, I also found a few other videos worth sharing, which offer a few practical suggestions as to what to do if your cat goes missing, and I hope that it comes in handy.
