Versed thoughts (chapter 53): Cat talk

29 Oct 2024

Dear LPG

One of my inspirations is my cat, who makes such a difference in my life by keeping me company even though she only has a three-word vocabulary.  You don’t have to own one to hear when a catfight occurs in the back garden. It doesn’t happen often, but even if you don’t own one yourself when a cat offers their version of ‘fighting talk’, we don’t have to be able to interpret to know what is going on.

Then there is the ‘purrr’, their second utterance which perhaps has the most relaxing effect on an owner who has their pet on their lap.  You run your fingers over their fur, and they offer that calming sound that conveys their contentment and somehow enhances yours.

And finally, the only word they know.    Most who own one can tell so much from how they deliver their ‘meow ‘even though it is the only communicative utterance they ever offer a human.

Allow me to put my thoughts into verse…

Cat Talk

My pussycat cried “Meow, Meow!
I must go out to play!
I see another cat out there,
Please, I must go out I say.

Meow, meow, let me go.
I will not run away.
I know that I’m your favourite pet.
I won’t leave home, at least not yet”.

I said to pussy, “You stay right here,
I cannot let you out today”.
Her bitter cries I could not bear.
I had to move out of her way.

Meow! Meow! Meow! She cried.
I want to see my friend,
I said pussy there’s the door,
You’re driving me round the bend!

And as the cat went through the door
I smiled and shook my head,
But as I turned to close the door
She slipped back into bed.
