The importance of sharing your legacy of wisdom…

09 Sep 2024

Dear LPG

I recently found myself browsing the internet when I came across a list of what are thought to be the most famous quotes of all time. Each quote was inspiring in its own way.

For the most part, the ones the internet lists as ‘the best’ all seem generic, motivational, and have to do with life, but they can lift the spirit when you feel down. However, they are all so very different.  Perhaps they can best be described as diverse utterances full of reasonable judgment we can all identify with and learn from.   The idea that failing is vital before success comes up a lot.   There is also a lot to remember when you remember that your fellow man is as important as you; what you have on the inside is more important than what others see of you, which is also a dominating theme.

I know that no one can get to retirement without learning some of this stuff for themselves, but on a day when you are not feeling so positive, reading a few might work as one way of lifting some of the depression we can so often face the day with.  Reading a few words of wisdom penned by others can make me feel more optimistic.

I found many anonymous ones as interesting as the ones attributed to the famous. Still, the one thing that so many of them had in common is a message of positivity that, regardless of how long ago they were first uttered or written, still rings true today.

Many of them vary on some fundamental themes, and I know that many lists of funny ones are designed to make you laugh rather than think.

Some people would say that this planet has so many records that there is no room for many more, but the world must grow, and there must be quite a few quotations that still need to be chronicled. It got me wondering what my ultimate bit of advice would be for the people of the world, and I could not do that without wondering what each of us who has the privilege of taking a look from our life portal has to offer.

Perhaps there is, has been, or is soon to be a quotation inside each of us that will pop out during a conversation we have somewhere.  We older people do not have a monopoly on life experience, but it can be argued that we have seen more of it than most. The real secret is not letting all that wisdom escape. Highlight it there and then, whether you hear it said or you say it yourself.

But in my experience, they can also be easily missed, which is a shame. We should watch out for the ones that are said as we participate in the conversations we have and the reactions we experience both personally and when seeing what happens to the people around us, and make sure that they get remembered.

I believe we each have some wisdom to share with the world…
