Nature’s Gym: Exercise And Environmental Preservation

31 Jul 2017

We all know how important physical activity is, especially as we age, but finding the right activity for you can be difficult. Do you not do any exercise because you haven’t found an activity that you enjoy? If that’s your case, continue reading. If that’s not your case, continue reading too, as you might discover a new enjoyable way of keeping fit: nature’s gym.

Nature’s gym simply means to use a green space as a gym. Lewisham council gives you the opportunity to improve your fitness by joining conservation activities in nature reserves and parks in the borough. Sessions are free and take place every Thursday, and once a month on a Saturday from 11am till 2pm. everyone is welcome as no experience is needed. It doesn’t matter what your abilities are: there are so many tasks to carry out that there will be one for you. For example, you can help in building a bug hotel or cleaning rivers. A program containing the different activities is published every three months and it can be found here: https://natureconservationlewisham.co.uk/ To join the sessions, you just have to fill in a form that can be found here: https://www.lewisham.gov.uk/getinvolved/environment/Pages/Natures-gym-conversation-events-and-volunteering.aspx.  They can also organise environmental activities tailored specifically for your organization or community groups at sites such as Beckenham Place Park. If you are interested, contact Greenscene for Nature Reserves or Glendale's conservation officer for Parks on 020 8318 3989.

All in all, nature’s gym combines environmental preservation with exercise and it is a great opportunity to get in touch and meet other nature lovers. Can you think of a better way to move your body?
