Beckenham Park Renovation
24 Jul 2017
Parks are crucial spaces in Lewisham. They are perfect places for socialising, pleasant spots for sports and excellent places to enjoy nature. You’ve probably been many times to some of the parks in Lewisham so you know how important the role they play in our community is. That’s why improving our parks is one of the council’s priorities.
Beckenham Park is the largest green space in our borough and is undergoing a major renovation. This park boasts ancient woodland, meadow, parkland, a river and several historic buildings. However, this park is under-used, its historic buildings are in need of significant renovation and the park as a whole requires investment. A survey carried out in 2013 concluded that the reasons for the underuse of the park are a lack of attractions and features, the presence of unusable and derelict features, a large area is out of bounds and woodlands are difficult to navigate and it feels unsafe for some people. The current renovation plan will address each of these issues.
But what exactly does Beckenham Park need? A number of consultations were carried out between January and April 2016 to find out what neighbors wanted. Consequently, new improved features and facilities include a restored natural lake, a wet woodland area, a new cafe in the restored listed stable block, an education center, a volunteering hub and a orchard. There are plans for many new sport and leisure facilities too, including a trim trail and a 5km running route within the park. All these new features will be designed for improved access for those with limited mobility. The works are planned to start in early 2018 and will finish in Spring 2019. Let’s all hope that this lovely green space becomes a place that has something to offer to everybody.
