Versed thoughts (chapter 75): Two plus Two

30 Apr 2026

Dear LPG,

I was inspired to write a few verses about our bodies' servants, those body parts that have to be rated up among the most overused and often underrated. Most of us have two; they do so much for us during nearly every phase of our lives.

They spend so much of our lives employed in so many things that, once learnt, we take for granted.  The sports we play, the food we cook and eat, the clothes we wear each morning, the hobbies we pursue, and so much more.

They only appear composed with nothing to do when replicated as part of a statue or displayed as part of a Tomb effigy.

I hope that what I have written will encourage us to take a moment to celebrate the ones we have…

Two plus Two

At the ballet on Monday
The clapping was vigorous.
Though Romeo and Juliet were dead.

As the race finished
The applause filled Ascot.
The winning horse measured sixteen hands.

Sixteen hands pulled on oars.
While the cox steered.
Uproar celebrated Cambridge.

The relay was close,
the handovers were perfect.
Four flags covered shoulders.

Three trumps, I signalled my partner.
A winning hand, big smiles.
Frowns passed between our opponents.

Gaze at the stone tombs in the abbey
or the prehistoric figurines in the museum.
Still hands crossed, showing deep reverence.

In the orient, greetings are made
with hands pressed together before the heart.
Namaste signifies deep respect for the other.

World-wide, songs of Hallelujah
with hands held high
signify ‘Praise to the Almighty’.

She is washing her hands.
We all had to be careful
during the pandemic.
