Is your electricity bill affecting your toes…?

17 Jan 2026

Dear LPG,

I doubt whether there is anyone in the western world who will say different.   We have nearly all spent a few years watching the cost of electricity rise and, even though our summers are getting warmer, our winters don’t appear to be following fashion.  All our utility bills are rising and the more we spend on them the less we seem to get in return.

This is the situation that generated that now well-known phrase about ’heating or eating’ which I have heard on TV and in the newspapers so often during the winters since the pandemic.  But it’s also a phrase that my toes are very aware of each morning when I wake up, if my sleep is not interrupted before the usual time by them.

I know I am not alone when I feel the need to have a bit of a tantrum because my nighttime toes do nothing but remind me about just how cold they are and, if that is not sufficient as a reminder, my electricity bill always has the same effect.

This was the inspiration behind why I took the time to find out what the internet has to say about keeping the little piggies warm during those cold winters, and having done the research I thought I might share it.

Most of us will have learned that if you can keep the very top of your head, your fingers and your toes warm you are more likely to stay warm all over and my focus on those lower extremities taught me that keeping them dry is also really important.   So I found a little information about how best to do this in the cold which included one somewhat radical idea that I have not had the courage to try so far, but as ever, the internet has a lot of differing advice to offer.

So while we all continue to do our best to minimise the winter heating spend, I would like to share some of the advice I found online.  My little bit of research resulted in quite a few of those more obvious suggestions that might have been overlooked so far this year but I also took a look at a few more radical ones too.  I have asked LPG to share them in the hope that something new or forgotten until it is revisited, might work for a few of my fellow cold footed readers…

LPG offers JW’s suggestions with the usual cautionary hint to your check on how it might affect your personal health before trying the more radical ones…
