The events in life that shape us…

30 Mar 2026

Dear LPG readers,

I know that LPG is always looking to ensure that the writings of we, the older members of society, can also be featured on the world wide web and I was recently looking through a box of papers that were left by my mother.

I remember LPG wanting to feature some accounts of stories which bring events of the past back to life and thought that this short passage might resonate with a few readers.  I am betting that they might inspire a few other readers to remember a few details that were part of their experiences of matrimony in the early 1950s.  My mother wrote on many subjects that many others will see as the variation on a theme that we can all relate to…

With this in mind I hope that readers might enjoy reading what she had to say about her wedding which, though typical, was also so very individual.

MY DISASTROUS WEDDING DAY/…

‘No one had thought about a photographer, so some "snaps" were taken in the back garden, the backdrop being a pear tree, a row of socks on a washing line and an open lavatory door.  Our honeymoon consisted of my having 2 weeks off work, which I spent shopping in Richmond High Street for kitchen utensils, while my husband returned to work. We eventually had a honeymoon 19 months later, when with my superannuation money we were able to have 3 glorious weeks in Florence, Italy.

I suppose the speed at which everything had to be organised left me, a young innocent, poorly prepared for such an event, but our wedding day was undoubtedly a DAY I SHALL NOT FORGET.

I want to stress that I was not there or even thought of at the time, in spite of the rush she implied, but her words give a flavour of weddings in those days and might well resonate with other readers provoking them to reminisce a little about their big day.
