Having a go: - South Africa, wrong day, wrong oven, but not too bad considering
27 Apr 2026
Dear LPG food fans,
I have mentioned my strategy of looking for recipes that have ingredients that I recognise before and stuck to that plan, even though I suspect that some readers might disagree having read about some of my more recent attempts at international cooking.
As ever I did my best to select a national dish that possessed ingredients that I was sure I recognised although the list worried me just a little. Having taken a look at a few pictures of how the finished product was supposed to look, the inclusion of Jam, curry and malt vinegar left me looking forward to experiencing just how the finished flavour would work out in this one.
Having got all the necessary things needed, I got to work and I nearly forgot the first instruction on the list. I had already soaked the bread in the milk and had the mince in the pan before realising that I had not pre-heated the oven. This was not the worst thing that could happen because I am not the fastest cook in the world so I back-tracked only to find out that my oven was not working.
But I had already started on the rest of the preparation and it was too late to turn back by that point. There is a solution to every problem and so I decided to use the air fryer although I have to admit that I have not got translating the cooking times and temperatures down to a fine art yet. It is always a bit of a gamble when you do that for the first time but I stuck to the plan.
My taste testers thought the taste was not too bad considering, although they could not help but see that I should have turned the air fryer’s temperature down a bit more than I did. Overall, the verdict was not as bad as it could have been. I have since had another go and that version was much better although I have offered a picture of my first attempt. I think that posting the second would be cheating in a way…
There was one other little mistake. I got the date of South Africa’s Freedom Day wrong (right date 27th – wrong month – April not March) and consequently so I have waited an extra month before asking for this to be posted.
Now May is on the way which brings me to a bit of a Georgian Challenge. I am going to attempt something sweet which is called Churchkhela, and I will tell you all about how that went on May 26th (I have double checked!)
