Having a Go: Georgia, hanging your food out to dry is different…

25 May 2026

Dear LPG,

I thought that something a little sweet might make a change, and having taken a look at how today’s cooking project is supposed to look in the end, I thought that it would be the perfect sweet-treat for the time of year.

My initial look at what was involved focused on the fact that it was described as an easy recipe because perhaps that is the most important aspect of any dish I try to produce.

I think that most LPG readers will have a pretty accurate idea of my ability to follow a recipe by now and, in spite of the fact that I really do take a much closer look at what is involved before I embark on my independent cooking projects these days, there always seems to be something that the theory never quite prepares you for the practical application of.

It did not occur to me that a bit of simple needlework would be such a challenge.  Sewing walnuts together was fine once I got the hang of it but it took a bit of time to work out how to impale each kernel without a lot of shattering.  Of all the nuts I know, there is nothing quite as wrinkly as a walnut.

Making the grape juice coating was very simple although it took hours of pot- watching and stirring to get the liquid to a state thick enough to cover the nuts properly, and finding somewhere to hang the fruit and nut ‘ropes’ without the cats wanting to investigate them presented yet another unforeseen obstacle to overcome.  In the end, I hung them dangling over the kitchen sink and they took three days to dry.  The result was surprisingly nice, although respect limited the amount of sugar that the average older constitution can handle, my predominately diabetic taste testers were only able to literally taste rather than eat them in the end.

With May behind us, it is time to take a look at what is in store for the month of June, and hope that I have chosen something that will help us honour another independence day with style.  I am quite excited to try this June-inspired recipe that is supposed to be simple and the ultimate taste of Samoa.
