Let’s not let the people forget …
26 Jun 2026
Dear LPG readers,
It is time for LPG to blow its own trumpet a little and let you know that it is our anniversary again. We like to think that we can double our annual birthday celebration, and the numbers 9 and 42 are of significance this year.
Way back in 1984, the original editors thought it important that there should be a newspaper dedicated to the pensioners in our community, and the idea was born.
Most LPG readers will have been in their 30s and 40s back then. There was a lot more time to read as we waited on public transport, or in places such as our doctors’ surgery waiting rooms. As people who have lived through both eras, you may well agree that it was a time when waiting was a part of life that left our minds time to breathe.
Since then, television and computers have radically changed our lifestyles and most people regard waiting time as an opportunity to spend looking at the small screen that is always available in their back pocket or handbag these days.
Thinking back to the latter half of the 20th century, how many times have you said, or heard someone say, that they were going to write to the papers? At one time, it was the thing to say when some official or political situation got us fired up and so many of the letters that were featured were about something that the writer did not agree with, but according to the internet, less than 1% of people ever carried out such threats.
These days, we have the internet and the young certainly know how to make use of it. We older people have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to getting our points of view across, which is the main reason why we at LPG keep going.
There is so much to be said which continues to be reflected in the variety of stories and messages that we receive and post, and we see each message as a part of a legacy that will be lost if the older people of this world forget to leave them behind to be shared in the future. We at LPG feel that it is the duty of our older generation not to let people forget.
Our aim has always been to share what people have to say; in particular, the writings and wisdom of the older members of our community and while we started out on paper, we have been electronic for the best part of a decade now.
We know that the older people among us are now much more able to find their way around the internet although, while our older readers have plenty of valuable insights to share, many need help getting them online. So, we are happy to write for you even if you prefer to remain anonymous. We know that every reader has at least one message that belongs on our pages and so we ask that you visit our contact page to learn how easily and anonymously you can share yours…
Lastly, we need to tell you that the present editorial team (or what is left of it) has been involved for about half of the Charity’s existence, and while we have no intention of leaving voluntarily, we are always aware that either God or fate might have other plans. So we are always looking to attract some new members to the editorial team and welcome any thoughts and communication to that end. But the best birthday present we can ever get is your story and news items via phone, letter, WhatsApp or any other means so that we can continue to share them.
