Versed thoughts (chapter 96): Once

6 Sep 2026

Dear LPG readers,

I suspect that there are few people who have reached retirement age without being able to identify with what I am sharing in the poem I am offering today.

It is the end of the world the first time we experience lost love and some will argue that the first time it happens is the worst.  I remember being 18 and thinking that my world was ending the day I first qualified as ‘rejected’ but at least I did not learn by text or social media.

I wonder just how many of us older more experienced people would argue that it gets easier when it has happened to you a few times or that you get used to finding a way through it?

Can you relate to this?  If the answer is yes, I pray that you felt this way a long time ago, and that you have now found someone else…

ONCE

Once you said you loved me,
Once you said you cared;
Nothing else did matter,
Only the love we shared.
Once your words assured me,
That we would never part;
But now you plan to leave me,
With a sad and broken heart.

Once you burned with passion,
When you held me close;
Now you make confession,
And without remorse.
Once you showed me pity,
Made me laugh and cry;
Once your words were witty,
Now you’re saying goodbye.

Once we had each other,
Once our love was true;
Now you say it’s over,
That I’ll be losing you.
And now that you have said it,
That you and I are through;
It will take me just one moment,
To say farewell to you.
