Versed thoughts (Chapter 97): - Old Age and Happy Memories

1 Oct 2026

Dear LPG,

I came across these words recently and cannot help but take stock of the differences in outlook that 30 years can make in a person.  I think that this poem leans towards the similarities. though.

Being a lady of a certain age, I think that most writers will not be surprised that I have no intention of stating numbers here, but thirty years ago, retirement was just making itself known on the distant horizons of my future and, having taken a look at the words some thirty years after I was inspired to write them, I don’t think that my view of the future has changed that much,

I wonder if people that read it at this time, whatever their age, will see and recognise the positivity I hope I included then and still stand by now...

OLD AGE AND HAPPY MEMORIES

I’m getting old and frail and weak.
I’m getting old, new strength I seek.
I need new strength; I need new sight.
Lord, fill me with your power and might.
My eyes are dim; life is a burden.
I’ve lost “my Jim”; I’m heavy and laden.

There are no tears, my eyes are dry.
If there were tears, I’d surely cry.

Though I am old and my hair is grey,
It is good to be alive today!

I’ve lived a long and useful life,
I was a Mother and a Wife.
I’m getting on, I’m all alone;
In spite of this I should not moan.
My memories will keep me strong,
While I pretend that I’m still young.
