Our favourite foods by place and time….

Dear LPG,
I found a couple of internet statistics that got me thinking the other day. Apparently 15% of British nationals have never been abroad on holiday. In this day of travel, I found that really surprising until I had a think about where I have been and what I have done.
I have only ever escaped Britain three times during my six-and-a-bit decades’ existence. Over the years I have watched my friends go off on exotic holidays, not to mention the really cold ones, but I am not a particularly adventurous human and the prospect of leaving the country, even for a holiday, has never really been at the top of my wish list.
I have always noticed that, when your holiday-making friends return and offer you that all-important description of their experiences, after their tales of the accommodation, what they did and the view from the part of the world they have visited, the next most important aspect of their time away is all about the food.
I don’t think that I am missing out though, because we have so many restaurants and take-away establishments available to us these days that you can reportedly enjoy what the world has to offer food-wise without deciding to float or fly halfway across the world to sample it. In fact, you don’t even have to leave the confines of your house thanks to the growth of the food delivery business.
Failing that, the internet and television are full of recipes and demonstrations when it comes to producing a version which is, if not totally authentic, at least vaguely recognisable as belonging to one world-region or another.
As I trolled the world wide web with the subject in mind, I found an interesting set of internet statistics about what foreign parts of the world we British people most like to sample the delights of. I have to stress that I only looked at one website’s version of the truth, but I felt the findings were worth reporting. I found what Just Eat has to say on the subject when doing my very limited research, and they report that Italian-inspired food seems to be the preferred way to go no matter what part of the British Isles you live in, although Asian food is still pretty popular. I did find the inclusion of Fast-food an interesting addition, although I suppose that we can argue that that comes from just about everywhere and has grown as we find ways to do everything more quickly.
I can remember when, back in the day, there were only a few places where you could get an authentic meal from another country, but things have really changed since the 21st-century sprint that has accompanied the evolution of the international food take-away.
