Hospitals; a personal Experience

Dear LPG,

The plight of the NHS is an emotive subject in the UK and probably played a huge factor in the previous Referendum and Election.

A much loved institution, the NHS as everyone reads in the press is overstretched and overburdened.

However issues documented in the press can remain an abstract concept until one is personally affected.

That was my experience until my Mum in her 70s began experiencing issues with her eyes.

In April 2016, she noticed she had bloodshot eyes for a period of days subsequently pain in both eyes and bubbling vision.

On a visit to the GP, she was referred to the Ophthalmologists at Kings Hospital.

Silence reigned for weeks, no feedback from Kings despite repeated calls from Mum.

Four weeks later, she was informed they were no available appointments and referred to Lewisham hospital.

This time there was an appointment, however it would be another month before she could be seen.

In frustration Mum decided to go private which she could ill afford.

The overriding concern, the potential of long lasting damage to the eyes caused by the delay.

It was very frustrating to see loved ones go through so much distress and worry.

To my surprise, there was an appointment a couple of days later at St. Thomas' within the private wing.

Private wing within an NHS hospital, who knew! Surprisingly not a well-known fact, the private facility wings raise funds for NHS within the NHS.

My take on it, the NHS is being privatised, slowly but surely.

Mercifully, Mum was seen, diagnosed and treated. She required medication and nothing more and her eyes are now much better.

Recommendations:

Mum would love to see more hospitals and staff, alas the government claim there are no funds to pay for it.

Also advocated visiting foreigners who partake of the service must pay for it and the government providing essential and proper governance to collect funds.

I understand in Norway citizens are taxed more to ensure a good health service, sounds painful but i would go for that over a four week wait!
