Does the biggest make it the best?

15 Mar 2018

Dear LPG.

It appears to me that it was only the other day that the House of Frazer department store in Lewisham was pulled down to make way for the new Lewisham Police Station.    It was also the day that Ladywell Police Station closed its doors.

But, even though I still think of it being a new building, which all happened in 2004 and was 14 years ago.  They have everything including stables there, and it is surprising how I have got used to seeing the horses going for a walk, leaving their calling cards and having to drive around them.   It is the largest police station in Europe, but do we feel any safer in that knowledge?

We hear more and more stories in the news about new ideas the police have found to sort new problems that they face, while there are people who are being told that their problems cannot be addressed by the police because of staff cuts and lack of funds, but I cannot begin to imagine how much it cost to erect that police station and others like it.

It’s big, but I recently read a story that was posted on this site and tells of problems one of your readers had and which appeared to be handled quite badly by the police.   Your article was called ‘Please remind me why we pay council tax again...’ and featured on July 13th 2017 and I have to ask the question once more having read it.

I am not pointing the finger at our flag ship achievement here and I am sure that its size is just coincidental.  But the fact still remains, that our Borough may boast the biggest police station in Europe, and I admit that I don’t have any answers, but are we tax payers really getting value for money?

AJ, Lewisham
