How can you stave off dementia?

23 Mar 2018

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of progressive neurological disorders. Symptoms of dementia can include memory problems, loss of cognitive abilities and problems with communicating. There are several risk factors associated with developing dementia, age being the greatest. According to the NHS, there is no certain way to prevent all types of dementia. However, there are some ways to reduce your risk of developing it.

- Diet. Try to eat as healthy as possible. A low-fat, high-fibre diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables can help. Also try to limit the amount of salt in your diet and the amount of food that is high in saturated fat.

- Weight. Being overweight cat increase your risk of developing some kinds of dementia, so this is another reason why you should look after your diet.

- Exercise. It has been proven that exercise can reduce dementia risk, as it helps to lower your cholesterol and keep your blood pressure at a healthy level. Ask your doctor what exercise fits your needs.

- Alcohol. Drinking too much alcohol will cause your blood pressure to rise, which can increase the risk of developing dementia. Don’t exceed the recommended limits of alcohol.

- Smoking. Smoking can cause arteries to narrow, which can lead to a rise in your blood pressure and your risk of developing dementia. There are many other health problems associated with smoking, so quitting this habit is always a good idea.

It is just a matter of common sense: the healthier your lifestyle is, the less chances of developing dementia.
