What to do when everything is changing

26 Mar 2018

The world is changing fast. If you have children or grandchildren you have probably noticed how different the world is today compared to how it was when you were their age. Although we usually say that some things were better back then, change isn’t always bad and the world has improved in many ways. However, sometimes things change so fast that is hard to make sense of these changes.

The pace of life has speeded up, people are now busier than ever before, daily lives seem to have become more complex, families are now structured differently, and traditional beliefs and values are being challenged. Everybody can handle a certain amount of change, however, too many changes can make us anxious. It happens especially to the elderly, as adapting to new situations gets harder as we age.

There is no choice: we need to adapt to change. But how? First, we need to analyse the situation to understand what is going on. Ask people who are involved in those changes. The more you know, the easier it will be for you to adapt. Been informed is also very useful to remove the negative prejudices that you may hold. You might think that some changes are negative, but maybe that is what you think because you don’t know the whole picture.

But some changes make our lives more difficult. However, try to welcome new challenges. Challenging situations can be an excellent opportunity to grow wiser. Again, being informed is crucial. And finally, sometimes you just have to let it go. As long as changes don’t negatively affect you or other people (in that case, you might want to fight for what you think that is fair), maybe trying to reverse them is not the best idea. Just try to understand what is going and embrace the opportunities that come along with new situations. You have been through so much that you surely have the experience to keep on living a happy life.
