Dear LPG,

I bet you don’t know who Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr was.

He was a 19th century, French-born journalist, but more significantly he was the one who is credited for observing that “Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.”  The English translation of this quote is “the more things change, the more they stay the same”.

Since time immemorial the basic aims of all the world’s people has been to make sure that their families have a safe place to live, food to eat, warmth, comfort and good health.

Things have become more complicated over the years as we have invented so many things to help, but for all the computers, mobile phones, fast cars, electronic gismos, TVs and other innovations that have given the impression of change during our lifetimes, it appears to me that our objectives are still the same as those written about regardless of where in the world or when in the world we live.
