Our day and most of us don’t even know it.

05 Oct 2019

Dear LPG

I am writing in the hope that LPG will be able to give its readers a little notice of one of the lesser-known commemorative days in our annual calendar.

I have just found a website which informed me that October 6th will be the day of this year’s Grandparent’s day.  I didn’t even know that this celebratory day exists.   With just a little web-surfing research I have learned that it was first celebrated in 1965 in Poland and October 6th is supposed to be the day of our UK national annual celebration, even though this is the first time that I have heard of it.

Apparently our grandchildren are supposed to use this day to acknowledge our contribution to the wellbeing and quality of their lives , and although many grandparents have a healthy relationship with grandchildren that take the time to be part of their lives, we often hear of the older ones who are at an age when they don’t find that much time to remember us grandparents, or even their parents as they travel through life at 100 miles per hour, or those with parents who have moved so far away that we are lucky to rarely see or hear from them at all.

It is also interesting to note that while mothers and fathers get their own dedicated day each year grandparents have to share.

LPG found some information on traditional aspects of Grandparents day…
