Electric blankets; a good or bad thing?

20 Feb 2019

Dear LPG,

Now that it is getting colder many of my friends are taking their electric blankets out of storage and plugging them in.  I have to say that they have always worried me. The thought of being that close to something electrical is disturbing for me and my idea of being close to electronic heat is sitting with my cold fingers outstretched close to, but not in contact with, my electric heater.

Although we are now well into the colder weather and it is a little bit late in the day, a few of my friends got talking about how they would not be without theirs at this time of year.   They just need to get their blankets back on their beds and plug in to get a guaranteed warm night’s sleep.

The discussion got me thinking about the safety aspect, and the age old questions start working their way through my head… How many years should you use one for before it needs to be checked, who can you go to to get your blanket checked, should you sleep with it on all night, how much to they cost to run, when buying a new one what aspects are most important to consider?  I have many more in my mind too.

I googled and thought it would be good to pass on the information that I have found.  I am sorry but I cannot help but be unsure about them but if you use one perhaps you should take a look at some of what the internet offers as advice on the subject.

LPG made some enquiries and found out that some years Lewisham Trading Standards run a scheme whereby they invite people in the borough to bring their electric blankets for testing  but budget cuts mean that this will not happen in 2018.  BL was kind enough to share the following links…
