The pancake topping that may just add to mother’s ruin.

05 Mar 2019

Dear LPG,

I was browsing the internet the other day and found out that Marks and Spencer will be selling a new pancake topping this year which will be lemon, gin and tonic flavoured.

To my mind Shrove Tuesday and its historical significance is lost on our youngsters these days. Perhaps it is something we can talk to the grandchildren about as their parents just don’t seem to have the time, but I have to say that this new flavour idea gives a whole new meaning to having a bit of a feast while you use all those ingredients that you should clear from your kitchen so that you are not tempted to eat all the wrong things during the following 40-day period of lent.

I have to say that I have never been a fan of the pancake with just lemon on  because I have always thought that there was so much more flavour that could be added, although I have never gone as far as alcohol. I like fruit and cream in mine, but does that not make it a French Crepe... and I have also tried the savoury ones with things like ham in, which I suppose makes it more of a refined omelette? Who cares, as long as it tastes good; especially if you still keep up the tradition of giving up one of your favourite foods for lent?

While I was browsing I also found some other really interesting suggested toppings, even an American showing us how to make the French ones.  I immediately thought that, for those readers who are also grandma’s and grandpa’s who do the pancake making so that their daughters, and daughters in law, have the time to do other things, one of these pancakes might add a little variety to the mix this year..
