My personal price war.

06 Apr 2019

Dear LPG,

I went shopping the other day and bought a bottle of washing up liquid.  I happened to be in Tesco’s and thought I got a reasonably good deal when I parted with my £1.50.  I then left the shop and went to Savers to get a completely unrelated item only to find that the very same washing up liquid was on offer for 99p.

I know it happens to many people and with items that are a lot less, and sometimes a lot more expensive than a bottle of washing up liquid, but do you remember just how upsetting it was to find yourself in this position back in the day?  I think that it is the thought of not getting the best bargain which is most upsetting, and not exactly how much money you could have saved.

I am old enough to remember when every advertisement that appeared on the ITV (in those days there was only a choice of two television channels) would end with a star clearly showing the price of what was being advertised on the screen.  In those days all the different supermarkets sold such items for the same price, but now, and for a long time, the price wars that our supermarkets offer us have been accepted as inevitable by us shoppers.

With all this in my mind, I opened my tablet (the electronic kind) the other day only to find that if (and I realise that very few people would be bothered to do this for such a small item), you Google Fairy washing up liquid, or any other product for that matter, and then go to the shopping category, much of the work involved in making sure you have a bargain is eliminated.  A list of high street, and online prices will appear for you and you can then make your choice in the knowledge that you have weighed up all the variables.

I know   I only lost 50p in this case but it is worth knowing that whatever you are buying, and especially when it comes to bigger items where losing a lot more money could be involved, you can compare price and so much more once again, courtesy of the internet (even if you plan to buy when you next walk down to the shops).
