...the voice of pensioners

One challenge at a time!

27 Apr 2019

Dear LPG

I have just read something that is a really valuable piece of advice, on your news page and want to say that as a young pensioner I totally agree with what CP wrote on 8th April 2019, (►►►)  but I want to emphasise one part of  the message and that is there is no value in fighting every issue that happens your way.  You will not be able to do them justice and end up stressing yourself into the bargain.

So, young pensioners, I would advise you to pick your fights but pick your fights carefully.

You need to research before you start and make sure that your facts are accurate.  It is really important to keep records of the dates of telephone calls, visits and conversations you have had and letters you wrote.  And this research and administration will demand lots of focus.  Take your time and make sure that you get the opinions and online information you need before you get started, and even if you don’t leave the battle the victor, people will remember.  Even if you don’t managed to achieve exactly what you wanted to, someone else may benefit from your intervention when what happened to you happens to them in the future.

We need to remember that statutory laws and company policies don’t get changed unless someone starts the process that changes them, and the so called law and policy changers often have little idea of the consequences of their legislation.  Corporate bosses, MPs, councillors and most other politicians may often be as old as we are, there are many just approaching what would be normal retirement age for other pensioners, but many of them just have no idea about what most of us are going through as a result of their concept of the world we live in and they control.

It is up to us to let them know and to do what we can to make sure that they take action on our behalf, as long as we don’t leave ourselves so consumed with fighting the establishment to the point where we forget to enjoy what can arguably be seen as the best years of our lives.
