Back to the back issue

20 Jul 2019

Dear LPG,

I have a problem which I just know that so many LPG readers will have had experience with.  My back pain is now getting to a stage where it is always with me, and again I know this is expected as we get older, but giving into it is not the answer.  Like so many before me I have tried all sorts of ways to make life a little more bearable as the pain has slowly begun to take its hold on me, and I am  still able to say that, for me, it is not so bad that it has ever stopped me from doing anything I have wanted to so far, although I am aware that the pain is getting  gradually worse and I am being advised that it is something I am going to have to get used to.

We have all heard that heat and cold compresses are helpful, and I have tried both but I have always wondered how you work out which of these will be more effective and the best one to use.

I found this video which explains the different effects that the two extremes offer and though it again shows younger people experiencing the problems I think it may apply to us older people too.

I also discovered a video which offers some other quick fixes that it may be possible to try.

I remember one of my friends trying to explain how the pain in her back affected her whole life and, at that time, I thought I understood what she was trying to describe to me but now I am getting a taste of the reality of living with it myself.   I know that there are so many suggested solutions and remedies on offer; I also know that there is never going to be one solution that will work for all, but I hope that what I have found may do a little to make life more bearable for a few readers.
