Having the older finger on the button.

24 Oct 2019

Dear LPG,

Since retiring I have found a new hobby and if anyone told me that I would be interested ten years ago I would have laughed at them.    Now that I have had time to settle into a new routine, and even though we are always being told that older people find getting online quite daunting, I quite enjoy the challenge.

I have also observed that many of my friends must be browsing a bit too, because now we have a new 4th topic of conversation.  When we meet up, we British are renowned for talking about the weather, whether it be too hot or too cold.  Our families and friends often provide a reason that will spark a discussion although care and discretion are the way forward with that one.   Then there is what we have seen on the TV, which is a very good way to get a conversation started because we have all seen the same things and have differing views on the drama, soap operas, reality programs, recent sporting events and news to be found there, but I find myself throwing information that I have learned from the internet into the mix more and more often too these days, and what is more, more of my friends are ready to pop the odd nugget of information they have found there in as a conversation-starter too.

We all have things that we prefer to look up and my interest is routed in something that I would think most would find boring.  I find myself looking up statistics quite a bit and here is one for you…

Did you know that the office of national statistics bears out my theory that the older members of our society are slowly coming round to getting on line although those statistics show that we older ladies need to catch up with the older men when it comes to engaging our fingers with the keyboard or keypad?

Perhaps a reader or two will pass the thought on by sharing what they have seen so that a few more of the so-far uninitiated can take that subject on board having read it online today…

TK, Downham

TK asked us to share the statistics she found in case readers would like to take a look at them…
