What really makes you you?

01 Nov 2019

Dear LPG,

I am not sure if everyone agrees, but there are some questions that often never cross our minds until we get to that part of our lives when the law of the land forces us to reassess everything.

For so many of us the story of life in a nutshell is as follows; -We are born and spend lots of time being taught how we are supposed to make it through life by our parents, which mixed with getting a lot of ‘telling offs’ and feeling hard done by, give way to school and a more formal education.  We then get caught up with work, partnerships and children.  That carousel turns and turns until suddenly the retirement brakes are applied and it all stops.

Although some of us think about those really deep life questions more than others, in my experience, once you get to retirement there seems to be much more time for this sort of thinking when the work–cogs suddenly come to a halt.

I try not to get too involved by stopping and thinking too much, but I have to admit to contemplating the real meaning of life and who I really am. I suppose it is easier to ask questions like,’ What makes you happy?’,’ What makes you sad?’, or’ What makes you special?’, but the big question for me is’ What makes you you?’,   and for all the effort I have put into this pursuit I have not really come up with many answers.

When at the computer the other day I thought I would find out what the internet experts have to say on the matter and I found a couple of interesting answers that I would like to share with LPG readers.
