One race that paper is still winning…

Dear LPG

I am a bit of a reader and really enjoy fiction and I have to say that one of your readers inspired me to write a few short stories of my own, although I know that the film version of novels are often the way to go for the younger members of our society.

Did you know that the electronic book was invented by Michael S. Hart and that happened in 1971, nearly fifty years ago now?  I have to say that reading electronically didn’t really occur to me until the latter years of the 21st centuries first decade when the kindle was the Christmas Present of choice.

Pictures are arguably thought of as an important aspect of any book these days but somehow never actually became a real feature of e books. Perhaps the fact that effective pictures are hard to produce on a kindle is a good thing as reading them forces us to use our imaginations again.

It also appears that the purpose built electronic book was a bit of a fad that did not really stand the test of time. I think that this is because the tablet also can be used for e reading and so much more.

The thing that really surprises me though is that in spite of all the modern technology, and the demise of records and even the CD and DVD shops, Waterstones, WH Smiths, the Works and other such book shops still survive for now.

SP, Ladywell
