Let’s prepare for a sleep in…

11 May 2020

Dear LPG,

I hope that this message gets put on the LPG web site on the day I have asked for and if it is, the day after tomorrow will be World Sleep day.

World Sleep day always falls in May, although I have seen some conflicting information explaining how they actually come up with the day in May each year.  From what I have read, I have worked out that this will be the 12th year it has been celebrated and there is a different theme each year although, I suspect that because I have written and sent this message to LPG quite a bit in advance, I cannot find out what the 2020 theme will be.

It is often said that we tend not to get enough sleep as we get older which is borne out when I talk to many friends who are, like me, in their early 80s.

I especially asked that this message go out a day or two before so that readers have time to consider at least one sleep related problem.

I hope to ask the sleep council this question; It is well known that many older people do not get sufficient sleep but I, for one, find myself napping two or three times during each day. If I were to measure the amount of sleep, I get during those daytime naps, should that time be added to my accumulative daily sleep when I am working out how much sleep I actually get each day?’

When I get the answer I will get back to you but in the meantime I suggest we all start our celebrations the day after tomorrow with a lie-in!

 HJ, Mottingham
