Heat… but please be careful!

13 Feb 2020

Dear LPG,

I am a pensioner who does not like to stay idle for long, and after a working life of sitting behind a desk all day, I have tried to find projects that take me away from all that.  While I still find sitting in front of my computer another thing that I continue to enjoy, I have also found that I enjoy making things and so I think of myself as a bit of a DIY pensioner and love to have a go.

I got up this morning and realised just how cold it is getting.  What does winter mean to you?  Many of us have thoughts of Christmas in our minds, but there are usually thoughts of those big heating bills as well.

Fusing my two hobbies together got me surfing this morning and I decided to see if I could find any new ideas about how to keep warm this winter. I came across a video which started by saying many things that we would all expect to be told (have a good breakfast, warm drinks throughout the day, layered clothing etc.)  but then, at the end there was a fascinating method of keeping things warm which may make an interesting project, although I think that it could also be a bit of a potential fire hazard, which is why, even though I cannot wait to see if I can produce a working one, I am not sure that it will be heating the inside of my house.  I did a little more looking around and found some quite ingenious ways of making it all work.

As with so many things that you find on YouTube, nearly all the information I can find about it appears to have originated in the USA, but the concept intrigues me and it will make a cheap building project. I am looking forward to seeing if it really works.

LPG would like to remind readers that CT sees this as a project rather than a DIY method of heating your home and again points out the potential fire risks of having such a device unattended in your home…
