Britain leaves Europe

15 Feb 2020

Dear LPG,

Well we’re out! Are you happy? I, for one, am most definitely unhappy!

The vision of Nigel Farage et al waving their Union Jack flags at the European Assembly, left me feeling embarrassed and ashamed to be British at the sight.

I found such disrespectful flouting of Assembly etiquette and rules of behaviour to be offensive and unacceptable.

Why is it not possible to disagree respectfully? I’m horrified!

Nigel Farage terrifies me. His brand of leadership seems to represent intolerance and bigotry. He leads by example.

The irony of the Assembly singing Auld Lang’s Syne isn’t lost on me, especially the line “we’ll take a cup of kindness yet”

We all would do well to take a cup of kindness. A huge dollop. Sadly, in politics today, it was all too lacking.

The climate of bitterness is being played out on our streets on a daily basis, a fatal stabbing in the middle of the rush hour at East Croydon last Monday and yesterday three fatal stabbings in Streatham. The government’s response? More police with guns, longer jail sentencing, whilst austerity cuts to youth services, education, adult social care and mental health budgets remain unaddressed.

More of the same is not going to fix this.

I’m reminded of Einstein’s definition of madness, repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result!

Once again, the turkeys have voted for Christmas!
