Could your cold do with a toddy today?

23 Feb 2020

Dear LPG,

It is now February and winter has definitely arrived, and my body has decided to do what it does best and land me with a cold.  I have had the jab but there is no doubt that I am definitely suffering in spite of that and I bet that I am not the only person who has spent the last few nights tossing and turning with the effect that the last few days have not been too good.

I don’t know about anyone out there reading but there comes a time when you just don’t know what to do. I remember when I was really young.  If this ever happened to me or one of my siblings, my parents would make me a hot drink with all the known ingredients; honey, lemon, ginger and some serious heat although when they were preparing something similar for themselves there seemed to be an added measure of whisky or rum included.

I know we have the prepared versions of the drink such as Lemsip these days but it never tastes quite the same as the homemade version.  There is something quite soothing about the thought that you made it yourself and know exactly what is in it I suppose.

I am not advocating a daily tincture, but when you are feeling really down one occasional measure won’t hurt will it?

I took a look at the internet, and from what I can see, provided it is not interacting with any other medication you are taking and you don’t have too many, the odd one won’t do too much medicinal harm…

So, even though we all know that it will work for some and not for others, if you are really suffering at the moment it might be the answer… If nothing else, I can personally recommend the placebo effect for a bit of sleep and that warm fuzzy feeling.

JW, Catford
