Inheriting a sticky hobby?

19 Jun 2020

Dear LPG,

While using the internet to find out about the penny black postage stamp I found out some other facts that I feel may be beneficial to the LPG community.  I am not sure what fascinates me about the subject and wonder if I am becoming a bit boring and ‘nerdy’ in my old age.

As a youngster I always thought of the stamp collectors I knew at school as a group who could find little else to interest them.  To the rest of us, they always appeared to be the more studious ones who did not enjoy going out and socialising very much; the ones who preferred to spend their time alone. But stamps can really be worth a lot and, though all I really know about the pursuit was learnt from the internet, I have found out that there are many societies that collectors can interact with.

I always think of it as a hobby which was superseded by computer games, but a lot more people than you would think continue to collect.   Sadly, and inevitably, as with every other pursuit, stamp collectors continually arrive at that point when they have no choice but to leave their collections behind to be inherited.

While I was looking up the information that LPG was kind enough to feature on May 1st this year, I found a very informative video or two on the subject of what anyone who inherits such a collection should do with it and thought that it might be useful to share it in case there are any new owners of a stamp collection who do not have a clue.

Of course, a newly-found collection might encourage its newly-found owner to get involved because there is one more thing that I found out as I took a look through many of the videos on the subject, and that is that most of the people offering them do not appear to be as old, introverted, and antisocial as I first thought.

I hope that it helps in a few cases….
