Have all the models rolled away?

26 May 2020

Dear LPG,

I recently read a government report which stated a fact that we knew a long time ago, and it did not take me long to find a worrying amount of similar evidence on the internet. It says that about a quarter of youngsters don’t have any role models in their lives.  This, to me, points to the fact that so few fathers wait around that long.

It is more likely that pre-teen girls will have their mothers while a frightening percentage of boys are deprived of this important advantage.

I think that people of my age come from a different era and it leaves me wondering where these fathers get to.  Is it any wonder that so many young boys are so easily led into violence, robbery, and other crimes?  It is frighteningly noticeable when we take time to consider which section of our society is responsible for most crimes.  This is not only happening in the UK, it appears that the whole world is affected with the youth going astray. Are their mothers to blame?

I am left wondering if most of these children are created out of love, or lust and one night stands, and it is frightening when you look at statistics and notice the numbers of young ladies, who these days, keep repeating this action with fathers who just move on.  Or perhaps it is financial. All too often we hear of mothers denying fathers access to young children because they will not help to pay for their upkeep?   Perhaps this is all the provocation a father needs to relinquish all responsibility.

Are mothers weak with their love; giving in to men for an easy life when they should be strong, not only in love but also with their son’s chastisement at an early stage in those young lives.  This would surely save so many of them the heartache of watching their children jailed, killed or otherwise because they chose criminality in their lives as they have no responsible male role model to guide them.

Most of us older ones can’t relate to the present generation and that is another fact.  I had my father to instil good values that stayed with me into adulthood, resulting in a law abiding individual.

The pensioners of today come from a time when mothers were frowned upon if they became single parents.  Their vocation was considered to be looking after the children while their husbands went out to work and the lack of contraception forced everyone to be a bit more careful; and where the governments of the world left parenting and discipline to parents.

Perhaps, it is up to more of us grandfathers to try our best to bond when they are really young.  If we can overcome geography with the help of modern technology when necessary, and be the person that they confide in when the need arises to offer solutions and guidance is needed, the world might benefit.
