Girls of a certain age, do you remember?

29 May 2020

Dear LPG,

I am a senior citizen, and I mean that even for senior citizens I am pretty senior, and nostalgia has been kicking in a bit lately.

Going back a long way, I can remember my favourite book, which was called ’Girls Crystal’.  I loved it! My favourite sweets were Ceylon Creams (I think they are now called Coconut Ice) I also liked banana and custard sweets which tasted to me a bit like toffees.

On St. George’s Day we wore red, white and blue ribbons in our hair and on Boat Race Day we wore a Cambridge or Oxford blue ribbon, depending on who we supported. I love Christmas and finding a new penny or (pennies), a tangerine, some sweets and a cracker in the stocking we hung up.

Yes, childhood days were lovely, and if your parents could afford it, there would be a trip to Southend-on-Sea visiting the Kursaal with all the fun of the dodgems.

Kids of today don’t realise what they have missed do they?

LPG has found a little information about a few of the things that RP remembers…
