Dating for the rest of this year…

13 Jun 2020

Dear LPG,

I read with interest what DC had to say on the subject of dating all that you write and I have something to add.  This advice is now 6 months late but I think it needs to be said again especially for those who, like me, still write the odd cheque.

It makes perfect sense really and I wish that I had read it at the beginning of the year but, the year is only half done so can I remind readers of the importance of making sure that you write the year in full this year when jotting it down.

Whenever you have occasion to write the date we have to be mindful that, because the first two digits are the same as the last two and our usual habit of assuming that people will understand ‘20’ to have written and meant the year 2020, it just needs someone to add a couple of digits after those two to put a whole new light on the year that was intended.

I have stumbled on the advice six months later than I should have but, just in case you are a cheque writer, or about to sign some important document, I would like to again, or for the first time this year, make you aware of the possible consequences, please take a look at the computer links that I have asked LPG to add at the bottom of my post.
